the honest numbers
How much does an MVP cost in 2026?
By Majid Ali, founder of Bytecrest · 22 October 2026 · 9-minute read
Short answer
Across the market, published guides put a first version of an app (an MVP) anywhere from about $10,000 to $150,000, depending on complexity and who builds it. At Bytecrest, apps and AI builds start at $14,900, websites start at $4,900, and most first versions we quote land between $14.9k and $30k. The biggest price drivers are platforms, kinds of user, AI features and integrations.
This guide keeps two things apart. Market ranges are what published guides say the industry charges, and they cover everyone from solo freelancers to large agencies. Bytecrest prices are what we charge, as a fixed price for a small studio. Where a number is ours, we say so. Where it is not, we link the source at the bottom.
If you are still deciding whether to build at all, start with our guide on how to build an app without a technical co-founder. If your need is a marketing site, read what a startup website costs and what drives the price.
Market ranges: what the industry charges for an MVP
Published cost guides disagree, and the gap is wide. One puts a typical startup MVP at $10K to $50K, with complex AI builds above $150K. Another puts the average at $15,000 to $150,000, depending on complexity, team location and technology. Both are written by software vendors, so treat them as rough guides, not benchmarks.
The spread comes from who is building. A large agency with a project manager, a designer, several developers and a testing team costs far more than a small studio that does the same work with fewer hand-offs. Most of the price is people’s time, so the size of the team and where they are based shape the number more than the app does.
Bytecrest prices by type of product
These are our own prices as a small studio, not market-wide figures. Everything here is a fixed price agreed in writing before work starts.
Marketing website$4.9k – $12k
Simple MVP app$14.9k – $18.9k
MVP with AI or integrations$18.9k – $30k
Platform or marketplace$30k+
| Product | Bytecrest price | What it usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing website | $4.9k – $12k | 5–10 custom pages, copy, SEO setup, analytics, simple editing |
| Simple MVP app | $14.9k – $18.9k | Sign-in, 5–10 core screens, one main job done well, payments, admin basics |
| MVP with AI or integrations | $18.9k – $30k | An AI assistant or automation, calendar or CRM sync, roles, notifications |
| Platform or marketplace | $30k+ | Two-sided flows, complex permissions, offline mode, heavy reporting or compliance |
For example, Baba Clinic, a clinic system with six staff roles, printed documents and 316 automated tests, sits at the upper end of what we build. A booking app with one kind of customer and a simple admin sits near the bottom.
Estimate your own MVP in four questions
Answer four questions to see a planning range. It uses the same adjustments as the table below. It is a rough guide, not a quote. Your fixed price comes in writing after a free call.
Cost-driver breakdown: what each choice adds
Start from the $14.9k starting price for a full first version. Each choice below adds the amount shown. The bars show the size of the step, not a total. These are our own planning figures, and the real price depends on the plan.
| Question | Choice | Adds | Relative size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which platforms do you need? | Web app only | Nothing | |
| iPhone or Android, one platform | + $2k | ||
| iPhone and Android | + $4k | ||
| How many kinds of user will it have? | One (everyone sees the same thing) | Nothing | |
| Two (for example customer and admin) | + $2k | ||
| Three or more | + $4k | ||
| Does it need AI features? | No AI | Nothing | |
| An assistant that answers from your content | + $4k | ||
| Custom AI using your data and workflows | + $7k | ||
| How many outside tools must it connect to? | None beyond sign-in and payments | Nothing | |
| One or two (for example a calendar or CRM) | + $1.5k | ||
| Three or more | + $4k |
The planning range runs from the total up to about 20% above it, because scope always moves a little once the screens are drawn. Past $30k, you are building a platform or a marketplace, and it is better to talk it through than to trust a calculator.
What drives the cost of an MVP
Most of an MVP’s price is people’s time, and time goes where complexity is. These six things decide how much of it your app needs.
Platforms
Web only is cheapest. iPhone and Android from one React Native codebase adds roughly 20–30%, not double.
Number of roles
Every extra kind of user (customer, staff, admin) adds its own screens, permissions and tests.
Integrations
Payments, calendars, CRMs and maps each add a few days. A badly documented third-party API can add weeks.
AI features
Calling a model is cheap. Making it answer reliably from your data, with logging and a human hand-off, is the real work.
Design depth
A clickable mock-up of every screen costs more up front and saves the most money later, because changes are cheap before code.
Compliance
Health, finance and children’s data need audit trails, data residency and reviews that a simple app doesn’t.
The cheapest way to lower the price is to cut scope, not quality. A smaller first version that does one job well is better than a big one that does five jobs badly. The definition of an MVP from Atlassian makes the same point: build the smallest thing that lets you learn from real users.
How long an MVP takes
We do not promise a number of weeks before we have seen your plan, because the honest answer depends on a few things you control and a few you do not. What we do give you is a written plan with a start date and the stages in order.
- Plan. A free call, then a written build plan. This goes quickly if you know who the app is for and what version one must do.
- Design. Every screen as a clickable mock-up. This stage lasts as long as it takes you to be happy with it, so quick feedback keeps it short.
- Build. Short rounds that you test on your phone. More screens, roles and integrations mean more rounds.
- Launch. Store submission and hosting. Apple and Google review every app, and we do not control how long they take.
The things that stretch a timeline are late decisions, scope added mid-build, and outside systems with poor documentation. The things that shorten it are a clear first job, one decision-maker and fast feedback. Our app development process walks through each stage.
What it costs to run after launch
The build is a one-off. These are the bills that keep coming, so put them in the plan from day one:
- Hosting and database
- $20 – $300 / month for most MVPs (Cloudflare, Vercel, Supabase, Firebase)
- Apple Developer Program
- $99 / year, needed to publish on the App Store
- Google Play developer account
- $25, one time
- AI model usage
- Usually $10 – $200 / month at MVP scale, depending on volume
- Upkeep and small fixes
- Plan for roughly 15–20% of the build cost per year
Apple and Google publish their own fees on the Apple Developer Program page and in the Google Play Console Help. Hosting varies by provider, and many, such as Supabase, start small and grow with usage. These accounts go in your name, so the bills come to you directly.
Freelancers, a studio or an agency?
The same MVP can cost very different amounts depending on who builds it. The day rate matters less than how much of the managing ends up on you.
Freelancers you manage
You manage
Lowest day rate, but you become the project manager, and design, code and hosting rarely line up.
A small studio like us
Fixed price
One team owns design, build and launch, with a fixed price. Fewer hand-offs, less of your time.
A large agency
Most overhead
Strong process and big teams, priced for funded companies and long engagements.
How to spend less on your MVP
- Write down the one job it must do. Everything that isn’t that job waits for version two.
- Click through it before anyone codes it. Changing a mock-up takes an hour. Changing a built screen takes days.
- Start on one platform if your customers mostly use one, or use React Native so iPhone and Android share one codebase.
- Buy, don’t build, the boring parts. Sign-in, payments and email are solved problems. Use Supabase, Stripe and the like.
- Ask for a fixed price tied to a written plan. Hourly billing on a fuzzy scope is how budgets double.
What a Bytecrest build costs
Our website launches start at $4,900, and an app or AI build starts at $14,900. Most first versions we quote land between $14.9k and $30k. AI ads and growth run at $2,500 a month. You get the exact number in writing after a free 20-minute call, and it only changes if you change the plan. The code, designs and accounts are 100% yours.
